Stainless steel 316 has the performance of ultra-high heat-resistant,ultra-resistant,high strength, ultra-easy processing etc., what exactly difference between 316
and 316L? 316L
stainless steel has a wide range of applications in the chemical industry because
of its excellent corrosion resistance.316L stainless steel is also a derivative
stainless steels of 18-8 austenitic, and it add 2% to 3% of Mo elements. On the
basis of the 316L stainless steel, also derived from many kinds of steel, such
as adding a small amount of Ti derived 316Ti, after adding a small amount of N
derived 316N, increased Ni, Mo content derived 317L. Mostly 316L on the market is
produced in accordance with American Standard. For cost reasons, the steel
mills generally try to limit down Ni content.
According
to American Standard provisions, Ni content of 316L is 10% to 14%. But the Japanese
standard provides that, Ni content 316L is 12% to 15%. According to The minimum
standard, American standard and Japanese standard have difference on the Ni
content of 2%.it reflected in the price is still quite huge, so customers in
the purchase of 316L product still need to see the product is in accordance
with ASTM or JIS standard.
Mo
content makes the 316L steel has excellent resistance to corrosion, it can be
safely applied under the environment containing Cl- and other halide ions.
Because 316L main application is its chemical properties, surface inspection
316L steel for the less demanding (relative to 304 stainless steel), the
surface of demanding customers to strengthen the surface inspection. Because
316L and 304 have a considerable gap in price, some unscrupulous traders pretend
304 to be 316L for sale. Since the 304 stainless steel has no corrosion resistant,
if perforation happens will cause leakage, which will cause major accidents in
the chemical industry, it is recommended that customers purchase products that
do the chemical composition analysis to ensure safety.
Currently
on the market there is no a lot steel 316, the C content in 316 stainless steel
is the upper limit of 0.08%, while the upper limit of C content in 316L
stainless steel is 0.03%. Now that refining technology is very mature, steel mills
can be good at lower the C content, while the market demand for 316 is not
large, so generally steel mill only sell steel 316L.
316
and 316L due to different C content, there are gaps in performance. The higher C
content more easily lead to intergranular corrosion. For example, when the
welding time, Higher C content will also raise tensile and yield strength of 316
stainless steel.
As
can be seen from the above data, if the customer needs to stainless steel
welding, we recommend using 316L. If don’t need to welding and have a higher
strength requirements on stainless steel intensity, you can choose 316.
